“The Art of Print Collecting”
What makes a print collectible? How does collecting prints differ from collecting
other works of art? Join Carolyn Muskat of Muskat Studios as she discusses
the art of print collecting.
6:30pm - “Gilbert Rohde: Modern Design for Modern Living”
In the 1930’s and 40’s, modernist furniture designer Gilbert Rhode reached
almost celebrity status with his striking and innovative designs for Herman Miller.
Join Phyllis Ross, author of the only monograph as she explains
how Rohde’s work and life made him such an influential force in modern American
design. A book signing will follow the program.
7:30pm – Twentieth-Century American Design at the MFA
With the recent promised gift of The John Axelrod Collection, the MFA has been propelled into the forefront of collecting American twentieth-century design.
Focused on the Art Deco, or Art Moderne, style of the 1920s and 1930s,
the Axelrod collection consists of nearly 400 pieces of furniture, silver, ceramics, glass, metalwork, and other household objects by the top designers, craftsmen,
and manufacturers of the age. Nonie Gadsden, Carolyn and Peter Lynch Assistant Curator of Decorative Arts and Sculpture, will share highlights of this superb collection, and also discuss the MFA’s continuing efforts to improve the Museum’s holdings of post-war American modernism.
Saturday, March 28, 2pm - AD20/21 Award Recipient Vladimir Kagan
Internationally renowned furniture designer Vladimir Kagan
will discuss
his sixty-year career designing modern American furniture, and will receive
the first AD20/21 Lifetime Achievement Award. This program takes place at the
Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology, 41 Berkeley Street, adjacent to the Cyclorama. Free and open to the public, but seating is limited. To ensure your seats, RSVP to 617-585-0284.
